How Hard Is the Journeyman Electrician Exam?

Here's the answer most people want but few resources actually give: the journeyman electrician exam is harder than most people expect going in, and easier than most people believe after failing it once.

About 1 in 3 first-time candidates fails. That's not a scary statistic, it's a useful one. It means the exam is beatable with the right preparation, and it tells you something specific about where failures happen.

What Makes It Hard

The exam isn't hard because the questions are tricky or the material is obscure. The questions are clear, the answers are in the book, and most of what's tested is stuff you use on the job. The difficulty comes from two sources:

1. Time pressure

Most journeyman exams allow approximately 4–5 hours for 80–100 questions. That's roughly 3 minutes per question. In a closed-book exam, 3 minutes per question is generous. In an open-book exam where you're flipping through a 900-page codebook, it's tight.

Candidates who haven't practiced timed NEC lookups consistently run out of time. They know where to find the answer, they just can't find it fast enough. This is the single most common failure mode, and it's entirely fixable with practice.

2. Two articles that require real work

Article 220 (Load Calculations) is responsible for more failures than any other single topic. It has multiple calculation methods (standard vs. optional for dwellings, commercial calculations), demand factors for different load types, and table lookups that don't follow obvious patterns. Candidates who treat Article 220 as "read it once and understand it" are not prepared for what shows up on the exam.

Article 430 (Motors) uses different logic than most of the NEC. The full-load current (FLC) tables are in the back, the protection sizing multipliers vary by device type, and the overload rules use nameplate current instead of table values. Candidates who've never worked in motor circuits find this section disorienting.

Everything else, GFCI locations, box fill, grounding, conduit fill, wire sizing, follows patterns that are learnable through normal study. Articles 220 and 430 require you to actually work problems.

What Makes It Manageable

It's open book (in most states)

In 49 out of 50 states, you can bring your NEC into the testing center. That changes the nature of the exam entirely. You don't need to memorize hundreds of specific values, you need to know where to find them and how to apply them. A well-tabbed NEC codebook and practice with timed lookups is worth more than weeks of memorization.

The question format is predictable

Journeyman exam questions follow a consistent format. They describe a scenario and ask you to identify the correct code requirement. There are no trick questions, no ambiguous wording meant to deceive you. Once you've practiced enough questions, the format becomes familiar and the answers start to emerge faster.

The most-tested topics are concentrated

According to candidate surveys and licensing board guidance, roughly 60% of the exam pulls from 6 NEC articles: 210, 220, 240, 250, 310/Table 310.16, and 430. If you master those six areas, you've covered the majority of the exam. The rest, conduit fill, wiring methods, special equipment, fills in the remaining 40%.

How Long Does Studying Take?

Most candidates who pass on the first attempt studied for 8–12 weeks. Here's a realistic breakdown:

Weeks 1–2: Tab your NEC. Get familiar with the structure (Chapters 1–4 apply generally; 5–7 modify for special conditions; 9 has tables). Learn to find any article in under 30 seconds.

Weeks 3–6: Work through the high-frequency articles with practice questions, not just reading. For Article 220 and 430 especially, you need to work calculations, not just understand the concepts.

Weeks 7–9: Complete your first full-length timed practice exam. Identify your weak areas. Drill those specifically.

Weeks 10–12: Complete at least two more full-length timed exams. Review wrong answers with the NEC in hand. Retake until you're consistently scoring 80%+ on practice exams.

Candidates who compress this into 3–4 weeks fail at much higher rates.

The Honest Version of "Hard"

If you have real-world experience as an apprentice and you've worked with the NEC on actual jobs, the conceptual side of the exam won't be foreign. You know what a branch circuit is. You know why grounding matters. You understand motor starters.

What you might not have is the speed, the Article 220 fluency, and the motor circuit confidence that the exam requires. That's what studying builds. It's not about learning concepts you've never encountered, it's about building the recall speed and calculation muscle memory the exam rewards.

The candidates who fail and then pass on the second attempt almost universally say the same thing: "I didn't take it seriously enough the first time." They didn't do timed practice. They didn't work enough load calculation problems. They thought their field experience would carry them through.

It doesn't. Field experience helps, but the exam requires exam preparation.
