Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about GetLicenseReady.
What states are covered?
GetLicenseReady covers all 50 U.S. states! Our comprehensive question bank prepares you for state-specific licensing requirements while covering the core NEC 2023 material that applies nationwide. Whether you're in California, Texas, Florida, New York, or any other state, you'll find the preparation you need.
Is this based on NEC 2023?
Yes! Our questions are based on NEC 2023 — the edition most states currently test on. A few states (like Hawaii and Delaware) still test on NEC 2020. If your state hasn't adopted 2023 yet, you'll see a notice on your practice page. We update our question bank regularly to maintain accuracy.
How many questions are available?
We offer 1,600+ practice questions across Journeyman & Master levels, covering all major exam topics. This includes code calculations, grounding and bonding, wiring methods, motor controls, load calculations, safety requirements, and much more. Questions are regularly reviewed and updated to maintain quality and relevance.
Can I practice specific categories?
Absolutely! You can drill down into specific topics and categories so you can focus on areas where you need the most practice. Whether you want to master load calculations or review grounding requirements, you can customize your study sessions to match your needs.
How does progress tracking work?
Our progress tracking system monitors questions answered (total and by category), accuracy rate (overall and by topic), weak areas (topics where you need more practice), and study streaks (to keep you motivated). You can see at a glance which topics you've mastered and which need more attention, so you can study smarter, not just harder.
Do I need the code book?
While our platform covers NEC 2023 thoroughly, we strongly recommend having your own copy of the NEC Code Book. You'll likely be allowed (or required) to use it during your actual exam, getting familiar with how to navigate the code book is a critical exam skill, and our questions help you practice finding answers in the code, just like you will on test day. Think of GetLicenseReady as your practice coach, and the code book as your reference tool.
Do you offer exam tips or just questions?
Both! While our core offering is high-quality practice questions with detailed explanations, many of our question explanations include test-taking strategies and code navigation tips. You'll learn not just the 'what,' but the 'how' and 'why' behind each answer.
What's your refund policy?
We offer a 7-day money-back guarantee. If you cancel within the first 7 days of your subscription, you'll receive a full refund — typically processed within 5 business days. Simply go to Settings and click 'Cancel Subscription.' After 7 days, subscriptions are non-refundable, but you can still cancel anytime to avoid future charges.
How long do I have access?
Access duration depends on your subscription. Monthly subscription gives you access for as long as your subscription is active. Annual subscription provides full access for 12 months. As long as your subscription is active, you have unlimited access to all 1,600+ questions, progress tracking, and any new questions we add.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes! You can cancel your subscription at any time directly from your account settings. Go to Settings → Cancel Subscription. If you cancel within 7 days, you'll receive an automatic full refund. After 7 days, you'll retain access until the end of your current billing period, you won't be charged again, and your progress data is saved if you decide to return later. There are no cancellation fees or penalties.
Will this prepare me for my specific state exam?
GetLicenseReady provides a strong foundation for any state's licensing exam because core electrical theory is universal, NEC 2023 is the standard that most states base their exams on, and our questions cover comprehensive topics from basic theory to advanced calculations. That said, some states have unique requirements or specific local amendments. We recommend checking your state's licensing board website to understand any state-specific materials you might need in addition to our practice questions.
What's the difference between Journeyman and Master prep?
Both Journeyman and Master exams cover NEC fundamentals, but Master exams typically include more advanced calculations (load calculations, service sizing, etc.), test deeper code knowledge, cover business and contractor topics, and require higher passing scores. Our question bank covers the full spectrum from foundational to advanced topics, making it valuable for both Journeyman and Master-level candidates. You can focus your practice on the depth you need based on which exam you're taking.
How should I use GetLicenseReady to prepare?
Here's what works for most students: (1) Start broad – Work through questions across all categories to identify weak spots. (2) Focus deep – Spend extra time on categories where your accuracy is lower. (3) Use the code book – Practice finding answers in your NEC book. (4) Review explanations – Don't just check if you got it right; understand why. (5) Track progress – Aim for consistent 80%+ accuracy before your exam. (6) Practice regularly – Short, frequent study sessions beat marathon cramming. Remember: quality over quantity. Understanding 100 questions deeply is better than rushing through 500.
Which exam vendor/testing company will I use?
The testing company depends on your state. Common vendors include PSI, Pearson VUE, Prometric, and ICC. Each has slightly different formats and interfaces, but the electrical content is what matters – and that's what we prepare you for. Our questions are designed to ready you for any testing format, whether it's PSI's interface or Pearson VUE's system. Check with your state licensing board to find out which vendor administers your specific exam, but rest assured: GetLicenseReady prepares you for the electrical knowledge you'll need regardless of who's running the computer.
Is my exam open-book or closed-book?
Most electrician licensing exams allow you to bring the NEC Code Book, and some states permit additional reference materials. However, don't let 'open-book' fool you – knowing HOW to use the code book quickly and efficiently is a critical skill. You won't have time to read every chapter during the exam. That's where our practice questions shine: every explanation includes exact NEC references (like 'NEC 310.15(B)(3)(a)'), so you learn not just the answer, but where to find it in your code book. Check your state's specific exam rules, but either way, we'll help you master both the knowledge AND the navigation.
How do I navigate the NEC code book during the exam?
Mastering code book navigation is just as important as knowing the material. Here's how to do it efficiently: (1) Use the Index – Look up keywords related to the question (e.g., 'grounding,' 'conductor sizing'). (2) Know the Table of Contents – Understand how the NEC is organized (general requirements, then specific systems). (3) Practice finding articles quickly – Speed comes with repetition. (4) Use bookmarks/tabs – Mark frequently referenced sections (Article 250, 310, 430, etc.). Our question explanations include exact NEC article references so you can practice looking them up. By exam day, you'll navigate the code book like a pro – and that speed advantage is often the difference between passing and running out of time.
What's the difference between Journeyman and Master Electrician exams?
Journeyman exams focus on residential and commercial basics: fundamental NEC code knowledge, wiring methods, basic load calculations, and practical installation requirements. Master Electrician exams go deeper: advanced calculations (service sizing, complex load scenarios), commercial and industrial systems, deeper code interpretation and application, and sometimes business/supervision topics. The Master exam expects you to think like a contractor, not just an installer. Currently, our platform offers a comprehensive question bank that covers the full spectrum from Journeyman fundamentals to Master-level complexity. Focus your study on the depth appropriate for your exam level, and use your accuracy rates to gauge readiness.
Do you offer timed practice exams?
Yes! We offer both Study Mode (untimed with instant feedback) and Exam Mode (timed simulation). Exam Mode gives you 80 random questions with a 4-hour countdown timer, matching real test conditions. You won't see explanations until you submit, just like the actual exam. After completing, you'll get a detailed score report showing which questions you missed and why. Our recommendation: start with Study Mode to master the material, then use Exam Mode to practice pacing and build endurance. Knowledge first, speed second.
Can I use this on my phone/tablet?
Absolutely! GetLicenseReady is fully responsive and works seamlessly on any device – phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Study during your lunch break, on your commute, in the evening on the couch, or anywhere you have a few spare minutes. Your progress automatically syncs across all devices, so you can start a study session on your phone and pick up right where you left off on your computer later. Flexibility is key to consistent studying, and we've built GetLicenseReady to fit your life, not the other way around.
Who writes the questions?
Our questions are generated using NEC 2023 source text and verified against the official code. Each question cites the exact NEC article. We recommend cross-referencing with your own NEC code book.
