Florida Electrician Exam Tips

State-specific guidance to help you prepare smarter for your Florida exam.

💡What You Need to Know About Florida

  • Florida does NOT have a statewide journeyman electrician license. Florida issues Certified (statewide) and Registered (county/city) electrical contractor licenses through the ECLB.
  • The Florida Certified Electrical Contractor exam is administered by Pearson VUE and is an open-book exam — you may bring an NEC codebook.
  • The Certified EC exam has two parts: 100-question Technical exam (5 hours) and 50-question Business exam, both through Pearson VUE.
  • Some Florida counties and municipalities have additional local licensing requirements even if you hold a state license — always check with the local building department.

NEC Adoption & State Amendments

Florida adopted NEC 2023 via the Florida Building Code (8th Edition). The Florida Building Code (Electrical Volume) includes state-specific amendments that modify the base NEC. The exam covers both NEC and Florida Building Code requirements. Check DBPR and the Florida Building Commission for the current adopted edition.

⚠️Common Mistakes on the Florida Exam

  • Not properly tabbing and highlighting your NEC codebook before exam day — Florida's contractor exam is open-book, but an unorganized codebook wastes valuable time.
  • Confusing a Florida Registered license (county-only) with a Certified license (statewide) — scope and exam requirements differ.
  • Overlooking Florida Building Code amendments to the NEC, including hurricane-resistant wiring installation requirements and conduit burial depth rules that reflect Florida's unique climate.
