Ohio Electrician Exam Tips

State-specific guidance to help you prepare smarter for your Ohio exam.

💡What You Need to Know About Ohio

  • Ohio issues a statewide Electrical Contractor license through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB), but Ohio does NOT have a statewide journeyman electrician license.
  • Many Ohio cities and counties issue their own journeyman electrician licenses — Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and other cities each have independent licensing requirements.
  • The Ohio State Electrical Safety Inspector license is available statewide, but general journeyman licensing remains local.
  • Some Ohio jurisdictions require membership in or graduation from an IBEW-affiliated apprenticeship program before issuing a journeyman card.

NEC Adoption & State Amendments

Ohio has historically adopted the NEC on a staggered schedule. Check with the Ohio Board of Building Standards (https://com.ohio.gov/divisions-and-programs/industrial-compliance/board-of-building-standards) for the current NEC edition adopted statewide, and always verify local amendments with your city or county building department.

⚠️Common Mistakes on the Ohio Exam

  • Assuming Ohio issues a universal statewide journeyman license — you must check with your specific city or county for local licensing requirements.
  • Not accounting for city-specific amendments when preparing for a local Ohio exam, particularly for cities like Columbus or Cleveland that have their own electrical codes.
  • Confusing the Ohio electrical contractor license (OCILB) with a journeyman license — they are different credentials with different eligibility requirements.
