Electrician Exam Pacing: Time Per Question by State

June 13, 20263 min readBy GetLicenseReady Team

A 4-hour exam sounds generous until you learn it has 150 questions. Time limit and question count only mean something together, so we divided one by the other for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia to find where the exam clock is actually tightest, and what that means for how you should pace on test day.

Methodology

We took the journeyman exam question count and time limit from GetLicenseReady's state exam dataset (50 states plus DC, 51 jurisdictions) and computed minutes available per question for each. Some states split the exam into knowledge and calculation sections with separate timers; we use the combined totals. Always confirm the current question count and time limit with your state board, since formats change.

The median is 3 minutes per question

Across all 51 jurisdictions, the typical exam gives you 3 minutes per question (median), with an average of about 2.9 minutes. But the spread is wide: from about 1.6 minutes to 4.8 minutes, a 3x difference depending on where you test.

Five tightest exam clocks

These states give you the least time per question, so pacing discipline matters most here.

  • Illinois: about 1.6 min/question (150 questions, 240 minutes)
  • Michigan: about 1.9 min/question (80 questions, 150 minutes)
  • Arizona: about 2.2 min/question (110 questions, 240 minutes)
  • Iowa: about 2.3 min/question (80 questions, 180 minutes)
  • Maine: about 2.3 min/question (80 questions, 180 minutes)

If you are testing in one of these, calculation-heavy questions are the danger. A single load calc you have to look up can eat the time budget for three or four other questions.

Five most generous exam clocks

  • West Virginia: about 4.8 min/question (50 questions, 240 minutes)
  • Minnesota: about 4.1 min/question (80 questions, 330 minutes)
  • New Mexico: about 4.0 min/question (100 questions, 400 minutes)
  • North Carolina: about 3.6 min/question (100 questions, 360 minutes)
  • Oregon: about 3.5 min/question (52 questions, 180 minutes)

More time per question does not make the content easier, but it does mean you can afford to look up more references in the codebook without falling behind.

How to pace on test day

The math gives you a simple plan regardless of state:

  1. Know your number. Divide your state's time limit by its question count before exam day so you know your per-question budget (3 minutes is typical).
  2. Bank time on the easy ones. Answer the definition and lookup questions fast to build a cushion for the calculations.
  3. Flag and move. If a question exceeds twice your per-question budget, flag it and come back. One stubborn problem should never cost you five easy points.
  4. Practice at speed. Open book still rewards fast NEC navigation, so drill timed sets, not just untimed review.
