Washington Electrician Exam Tips

State-specific guidance to help you prepare smarter for your Washington exam.

💡What You Need to Know About Washington

  • Washington State issues a statewide Journeyman Electrician (01) license through the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) — one of the most streamlined statewide systems in the country.
  • Washington requires 8,000 hours of supervised electrical work experience (approximately 4 years) to qualify for the Journeyman exam.
  • The Washington journeyman exam is administered by PSI and is open-book — you may bring a tabbed NEC codebook.
  • Washington also offers a General Journeyman Electrician license and a specialty Residential Electrician license — make sure you're studying for the correct exam category.

NEC Adoption & State Amendments

Washington State has adopted the NEC with Washington State Electrical Code (WAC 296-46B) amendments. Check with the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (https://lni.wa.gov/licensing-permits/electrical/) for the current NEC edition and any state-specific amendments, as Washington regularly updates its electrical code rules.

⚠️Common Mistakes on the Washington Exam

  • Not studying Washington's state amendments to the NEC — WAC 296-46B includes state-specific rules that differ from the base NEC, and exam questions may test Washington-specific requirements.
  • Bringing an unmarked or poorly tabbed codebook to an open-book exam — Washington's PSI exam is timed, and navigating an unorganized codebook significantly slows most test-takers.
  • Confusing the Journeyman (01), General Journeyman, and Residential (06) license categories — each has different exam content and different allowed scope of work.
