Washington D.C. Electrician License Requirements (2026)

April 25, 20264 min readBy GetLicenseReady Team

Washington D.C. licenses electricians through the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP), Occupational and Professional Licensing Administration (OPLA). Licensing requirements are distinct from neighboring Maryland and Virginia — if you work in the D.C. metro area, you may need licenses in multiple jurisdictions.

License Types in Washington D.C.

D.C. issues several types of electrical licenses:

  • Journeyman Electrician — Licensed to perform electrical work under the supervision of or in conjunction with a master electrician
  • Master Electrician — Licensed to perform and supervise electrical work; required to pull permits in D.C.
  • Electrical Contractor License — Business license required for companies performing electrical work; must have a licensed master electrician responsible for the business

Journeyman Electrician Requirements

Experience

Washington D.C. requires approximately 8,000 hours of on-the-job electrical experience — roughly four years of full-time electrical work — before you can qualify for the journeyman exam. Experience must be in the electrical trade and must be documented.

Master Electrician Requirements

The master electrician license requires:

  • Active journeyman electrician license
  • Typically 2–4 years of journeyman-level experience after obtaining the journeyman license
  • More comprehensive examination covering advanced load calculations, service design, and business law
  • Application through DLCP

Electrical Contractor License

To operate an electrical contracting business in D.C., a company must hold an Electrical Contractor License in addition to having a licensed master electrician responsible for the work. Individual journeymen and masters do not need a contractor license to work as employees.

D.C. Metro Area: Multi-Jurisdiction Considerations

D.C., Maryland, and Virginia share a dense labor market. Important points:

  • Licenses are not automatically transferable between D.C., MD, and VA — each jurisdiction has its own requirements
  • D.C. has partial reciprocity recognition for some Maryland and Virginia licenses; contact DLCP to verify current agreements
  • Many electricians working in the D.C. metro area hold licenses in all three jurisdictions
  • Prince George's County and Montgomery County (MD) have their own exam requirements beyond the state Maryland license
  • Northern Virginia (NoVA) is a growing market with high demand for data center and government facility electricians

D.C. Exam Prep Tips

1. Know the NEC 2020 edition. D.C. currently tests on NEC 2020. If you've been studying NEC 2023, be aware of differences in article organization and specific code values — most content is similar but some sections differ.

2. Open-book strategy is critical. 80 questions in 240 minutes is about 3 minutes per question. You cannot look up every answer — you need to know where to find things quickly. Tab your NEC and know the key tables.

3. Focus on the high-frequency articles:

  • Article 110 — Working space clearances, temperature ratings
  • Article 210 — Branch circuits, GFCI, AFCI
  • Article 220 — Load calculations
  • Article 250 — Grounding and bonding
  • Article 240 — Overcurrent protection
  • Table 310.16 — Wire sizing
  • Article 430 — Motors

4. Master the D.C. market context. D.C.'s electrical market is heavily commercial and government — three-phase systems, data centers, and government facilities. Load calculation and commercial wiring questions may skew commercial compared to purely residential state exams.
