What to Expect on the Washington Electrician Exam

Washington has a statewide journeyman electrician license through the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I). The exam is administered by PSI: 77 questions, 240 minutes (4 hours), 70% passing score, open book with NEC 2023 permitted, and exam fees ranging from $75 to $85 depending on license class. Washington's exam is unique in that it includes both NEC/theory questions and Washington State Electrical Code questions. The 77 questions are divided into 60 NEC and theory questions and 17 Washington Administrative Code (WAC) questions covering state-specific electrical rules that differ from the national code. Candidates must be familiar with both the NEC 2023 and Washington's state-specific amendments before the exam. Washington requires 8,000 hours of apprenticeship training under a licensed journeyman or master electrician. L&I also licenses Residential Electricians and Electrical Contractors with separate exams and experience requirements. Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Bellevue, and Vancouver are the largest markets. Washington's technology sector, aerospace industry, and active residential construction market create strong demand for licensed electricians. The practice questions below cover all topics on the Washington L&I PSI exam.

Tips for the Washington PSI Exam

  • The Washington exam is open book, so tab your NEC for Articles 110, 210, 220, 230, 240, 250, 300, 310, and 430.
  • You won't have time to look up every answer. Know the major numbers cold, and use the book for edge cases.
  • PSI delivers the exam at its own network of PSI test centers. Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment with your ID.
  • PSI questions often test the specific NEC article number, not just the concept. Knowing where a rule lives matters.
  • Budget your time: spend no more than 90 seconds per question on the first pass, then return to flagged items.
