Los Angeles Electrician License Requirements 2026 — California DLSE & C-10
Los Angeles is one of the largest electrician markets in the country — and unlike Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia, it runs on a statewide licensing system rather than a city-specific exam. Every electrician working in LA, from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach, uses the same California DLSE certification or CSLB contractor license.
This guide covers both California credentials as they apply to working in Los Angeles, the exam format, and what to expect in the LA market.
California Electrician Credentials for Los Angeles
DLSE General Electrician Certification (Journeyman Level)
The Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) is the California state agency that certifies electricians at the journeyman level. The DLSE General Electrician certification is required to legally work as an electrician in California (including LA) unless you are a California Electrical Apprentice still in a registered apprenticeship program.
Who needs it: Any electrician performing electrical work in California who is not an active registered apprentice or the holder of a C-10 contractor license.
Issued by: California Department of Industrial Relations — Division of Labor Standards Enforcement
CSLB C-10 Electrical Contractor License
The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) C-10 license is required to operate an electrical contracting business in California — to bid on projects, pull permits, and employ electricians. You cannot legally run an electrical contracting company in LA without a C-10.
Who needs it: Electrical contractors, business owners, project managers who want to legally operate and pull permits.
Issued by: California Contractors State License Board

The Los Angeles Electrical Market
Los Angeles is one of the top three electrician markets in the United States alongside New York City and the Washington DC metro area.
Average electrician salary (Los Angeles metro): $73,150–$95,000+ IBEW Local 11 journeyman scale: IBEW Local 11 covers the greater LA area including LA County, Orange County, and surrounding areas. Contact Local 11 for current CBA rates, which run well above the state average.
Major project sectors in the LA market:
- Entertainment and studio infrastructure — soundstages, production facilities, theme parks
- Commercial high-rise — downtown LA, Century City, Playa Vista tech corridor
- Data centers — rapid expansion in the Inland Empire and across the LA basin
- Healthcare — Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Health, and other major systems expanding
- Green energy and EV — California's aggressive clean energy mandates drive ongoing work in solar, EV charging infrastructure, and battery storage
- Residential — high-density residential construction throughout the region
California Has No Reciprocity
This is worth emphasizing: California does not accept out-of-state electrician licenses. An experienced journeyman from Texas, Nevada, Oregon, or anywhere else must take the California exam from scratch. There are no exemptions, no experience waivers, and no recognition of other states' credentials.
If you're relocating to LA from another state, budget time to study and schedule the DLSE exam before your start date. See our Electrician License Reciprocity guide for a full breakdown of California's no-reciprocity policy and which states do have transfer agreements.
Preparing for the DLSE Exam
The PSI exam is open-book, which makes NEC navigation the core skill to develop. With 100 questions in 4.5 hours, you have about 2.7 minutes per question — enough time to look things up if you know where to look.
Most-tested topics on the California DLSE exam:
- Conductor sizing (Table 310.16)
- GFCI and AFCI requirements (Article 210)
- Conduit fill (Chapter 9 Tables and Articles 358, 344)
- Overcurrent protection (Article 240)
- Grounding and bonding (Article 250)
- Service entrance (Article 230)
- Motor circuits (Article 430)
