How the standard method dwelling load calculation works

The standard method in Part III of Article 220 is the long-form calculation, and it is the one exams reach for when they want to test whether you can navigate several demand tables in sequence. Unlike the optional method, it demand-factors each category on its own terms rather than lumping everything into a single 10 kVA plus 40 percent step.

General lighting starts at 3 VA per square foot, then the small-appliance and laundry circuits at 1,500 VA each are added to it, and the combined figure gets the Table 220.42 demand factors: the first 3,000 VA at 100 percent and the portion from 3,001 to 120,000 VA at 35 percent. That 35 percent step is a large reduction and it applies only to this combined lighting and receptacle group, not to appliances.

Ranges use Table 220.55, which is its own world. For a single household range over 8 3/4 kW and not over 12 kW, Column C gives a demand of 8 kW regardless of the actual nameplate, and Note 1 adds 5 percent per kW for ranges above 12 kW. Dryers use Table 220.54 at 5,000 VA minimum or nameplate, whichever is larger. Four or more fastened-in-place appliances on the same feeder get a 75 percent demand factor under 220.53.

Worked example

A 1,800 square foot dwelling, two small-appliance circuits, one laundry circuit, a 12 kW range, a 5 kW dryer, a 4.5 kW water heater, a 1.2 kW dishwasher, a 0.9 kW disposal, and a 5 kW air conditioner. Standard method.

  1. Lighting: 1,800 x 3 = 5,400 VA. Small appliance and laundry: 4,500 VA. Subtotal 9,900 VA.
  2. Table 220.42: first 3,000 at 100 percent = 3,000. Remaining 6,900 x 0.35 = 2,415. Lighting demand = 5,415 VA.
  3. Range, Table 220.55 Column C, 12 kW single range = 8,000 VA.
  4. Dryer, Table 220.54, 5 kW nameplate against 5,000 VA minimum = 5,000 VA.
  5. Fastened appliances: water heater 4,500 + dishwasher 1,200 + disposal 900 = 6,600 VA. Only three units, so 220.53 does not apply and they stay at 100 percent.
  6. Air conditioning 5,000 VA, larger than no heat load, so it is included.
  7. Total = 5,415 + 8,000 + 5,000 + 6,600 + 5,000 = 30,015 VA. 30,015 / 240 = 125.1 A.

Answer: 125.1 A, which exceeds a 125 A service, so 150 A is the correct service size. The 0.1 A over is a deliberate exam-style near-miss: calculated load governs, not the round number.

How this is tested on the exam

Master-level exams favor the standard method precisely because it forces four or five separate table lookups in one problem. The most common errors are applying the Table 220.42 demand factor to appliance loads it does not cover, and using range nameplate instead of the Table 220.55 Column C demand. Work the categories in the order the code presents them and label every subtotal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the standard and optional methods?

The standard method in Part III of Article 220 demand-factors each load category separately using its own table. The optional method in 220.82 applies one blanket demand factor, 100 percent of the first 10 kVA and 40 percent of the remainder, to a single combined general load. For a typical house they produce similar answers, but the exam expects the method the question names.

Why is a 12 kW range only 8 kW of demand?

Table 220.55 Column C sets the demand load for one household cooking appliance rated over 8 3/4 kW through 12 kW at 8 kW, on the reasoning that a range is never fully loaded on all elements at once. Above 12 kW, Note 1 increases the 8 kW figure by 5 percent for each additional kilowatt.

When does the 75 percent appliance demand factor apply?

220.53 allows 75 percent when there are four or more fastened-in-place appliances on the same feeder or service, other than ranges, clothes dryers, space heating, and air conditioning. Three or fewer stay at 100 percent.

Can I count both heating and air conditioning?

No. 220.60 covers noncoincident loads and permits the smaller of two loads that will not operate simultaneously to be omitted. Heat and air conditioning are the textbook case.
