During the Exam
Time Management Strategy:
- •Most exams: 80 questions in 4 hours = 3 minutes per question
- •First pass: Answer all easy questions (1-2 min each)
- •Second pass: Tackle medium difficulty (3-4 min each)
- •Final pass: Review flagged questions and guess if needed
- •Leave 15-20 minutes at end to review all answers
Test-Taking Strategies:
- Read carefully: Watch for "EXCEPT," "NOT," or "ALWAYS"
- Process of elimination: Cross out obviously wrong answers first
- Use your code book: If unsure, look it up (you have time!)
- Flag and move on: Don't waste 10 minutes on one question
- Trust your preparation: Your first instinct is usually right
How to Use the NEC Code Book:
- •Use the Index at the back to find topics quickly
- •Know common articles: 210 (Branches), 250 (Grounding), 310 (Conductors)
- •Tables are your friend: Annex C (conduit fill), Table 310.16 (ampacity)
- •Practice finding sections fast during your practice exams
Staying Calm & Focused
- Take breaks: Most test centers allow bathroom breaks (clock keeps running, but you can reset your mind)
- Breathe: If you feel stressed, take 3 deep breaths and refocus
- Don't panic on hard questions: Everyone gets tough ones - flag and move on
- Don't compare yourself: Some finish early, some use all 4 hours - both can pass
- Stay positive: You've studied, you're prepared, you've got this!
After the Exam
Immediate Results:
- •Most computerized exams show pass/fail immediately after completion
- •You'll receive a score report (but not specific questions you missed)
- •Passing score: Usually 70-75% (varies by state)
If You Pass:
- Official license arrives by mail in 2-4 weeks
- You can usually start working with provisional status
- Keep your score report as proof until license arrives
If You Don't Pass:
- •Don't panic - many electricians need 2 attempts
- •Review your score report to see weak areas
- •Most states allow retakes after 30-90 days
- •Use GetLicenseReady to focus on your weak categories
- •You've already seen the format - you'll be better prepared next time!
