What to Expect on the Texas Electrician Exam

Texas uses a single statewide licensing system through TDLR, which means one exam covers you from Houston to El Paso. As of March 2025, the PSI journeyman exam uses a two-part format: 59 knowledge questions (130 minutes) followed by 26 calculation questions (110 minutes), totaling 85 questions in 240 minutes. The passing score is 70% on each part. Both parts are open book, so bring your NEC 2023 tabbed for Articles 210, 220, 230, 240, 250, 310, and 430. Load calculations (Article 220) and motor sizing (Article 430) are the two areas where candidates most often lose points, so those are worth extra practice time. The TDLR exam fee is $78, and licenses renew annually for $30. Over 72,000 licensed electricians work in Texas, the most of any state in the country. Use the practice questions below to build speed with the NEC before your PSI appointment.

Tips for the Texas PSI Exam

  • The Texas exam is open book, so tab your NEC for Articles 110, 210, 220, 230, 240, 250, 300, 310, and 430.
  • You won't have time to look up every answer. Know the major numbers cold, and use the book for edge cases.
  • PSI delivers the exam at its own network of PSI test centers. Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment with your ID.
  • PSI questions often test the specific NEC article number, not just the concept. Knowing where a rule lives matters.
  • Budget your time: spend no more than 90 seconds per question on the first pass, then return to flagged items.
